The Story of the Portuguese Swallow

The ceramic swallow, or andorinha, is one of Portugal's most recognisable decorative symbols.

Popularised in Portuguese culture by celebrated ceramic artist Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro in the late 19th century, swallows have come to represent home, family, love and fidelity.

Their symbolism comes from the bird's tendency to return to the same nesting place, making ceramic swallows particularly meaningful as housewarming, wedding and family gifts.

Handcrafted in Northern Portugal

Casa Atlântica works with traditional makers to preserve the character and craftsmanship of Atlantic European design.

These glazed ceramic swallows are handcrafted in northern Portugal, where each piece is hand-moulded, glazed and fired. Their clean sculptural shape and contemporary colours give the traditional Portuguese swallow a fresh interpretation.

Style them against a crisp white wall, amongst artwork or as a flock travelling across an entrance, living room or bedroom wall. They work beautifully with Mediterranean, coastal, contemporary and eclectic interiors.
